Fernald, better known as The Hook-Handed Man, was one of the original members of Count Olaf's Theatre Troupe. While working with Olaf, he burned down Anwhistle Aquatics, Caligari Carnival, and possibly other places. How he lost his hands is unknown. He used to study poetry with Captain Widdershins before joining Olaf's troupe, and likes to play cards.
